Vanags T, Budimlic M, Herbert E, Montgomery MM, Vickers T. Showercap Mindmap: a spatial activity for learning physiology terminology and location. Adv Physiol Educ 36: 125–130, 2012; doi:10.1152/advan.00095.2011.—Students struggle with the volume and complexity of physiology terminology. We compared first-year undergraduate psychology students’ learning of physiological terms using two teaching methods: one verbal (control group; n 16) and one spatial and multisensory (experimental group; n 19). The experimental group used clear plastic shower caps to mark brain regions and affix labels to another participant’s head. The control group learned the material verbally through a game. When tested verbally, both the control and experimental groups recalled more of the 10 terms immediately after the activity ( 106% and 83%, respectively) and 2 wk later ( 53% and 31%, respectively) than at the pretest (P 0.0005). When participants’ knowledge was tested spatially (labeling a brain diagram), the experimental group recalled more terms at the posttest ( 76%) and followup ( 73%) than at the pretest (P 0.0005), but the control group who showed no improvement at either time point ( 12% and 14%, respectively). These findings support the notion that spatial and multisensory learning produces improved spatial recall over time while also supporting the notion of transfer-appropriate processing.

Enhancing effect of Tiliacora triandra leaves extract on spatial learning, memory and learning flexibility as well as hippocampal choline acetyltransferase activity in mice

Objective: The present study investigates the effect of Tiliacora triandra leaf extract on spatial learning, memory, and learning flexibility as well as hippocampal choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) activity in mice.  Materials and Methods: Thirty male ICR mice were randomly divided into three groups including 10% Tween 80, T. triandra 300 mg/kg and T. triandra 600 mg/kg. All administrations wer...

Single and Repeated Ultra–Rapid Detoxification Prevents Cognitive Impairment in Morphine Addicted Rats: A Privilege for Single Detoxification

Background: Opioids have been shown to affect learning and memory processes. Different protocols of morphine withdrawal can substantially vary in their success to prevent opioid induced impairments of cognitive performance. In the present study, we report the effects of single and repetitive ultra-rapid detoxification (URD) on spatial learning and memory in morphine addicted rats. Methods: Morp...

The effect of Crocin on scopolamine induced spatial learning and memory deficits in rats

Introduction: The cholinergic system plays an important role in learning and memory. Administration of either extracts of Crocus Sativus (Saffron) or its constituent, crocin, reduced ethanol-induced memory impairment. Based on the above findings, we investigated the effect of crocin in antagonizing spatial learning and memory impairment induced by scopolamine, a cholinergic receptor antagoni...

The effect of chlorogenic acid on learning and memory and acetylchoinesterase activity in rats with cognitive deficit induced by intracerebroventricular streptozotocin

Background and Objective: Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a major polyphenolic component of coffee. Reduction in the risk of a variety of diseases following CGA consumption has been mentioned in recent studies. The effect of CGA on learning and memory in rats with cognitive deficit induced by intracerebroventricular streptozotocin (STZ) and  acetylchoinesterase (AChE) activity was evaluated in this s...
